How do I write a brush specification a factory can quote?
A quotable brush specification lists seven things: brush type and use, hair type and length, ferrule material and diameter, handle material and shape, overall length, logo method, and packaging. Missing any one of them turns a quote into a conversation.
The seven fields
Type and use (flat, round, liner — and what it is for); hair type and length in millimetres; ferrule material and diameter; handle material, shape and colour; overall length; logo method and position; packaging type and quantity per pack. Add the target quantity and the destination market, because both change the answer.
What "good" looks like
A usable spec reads like a line item, not a description: "Round artist brush, Kolinsky, 12 mm hair, seamless brass ferrule 5.2 mm, short birch handle lacquered black, 190 mm overall, gold hot-stamp logo on handle, OPP bag, 500 pieces, Germany." Every one of those values is checkable at inspection.
Where photos help and where they mislead
A photo is excellent for shape and colour and useless for fill weight, hair grade and ferrule thickness — the three things that decide durability. Send the photo for shape and add the numbers for the rest, or ask us to propose numbers and correct them.
Common questions
What if I only have a photo of a competitor product?
Send the photo. We will propose a specification for shape and finish, and you approve or adjust it. Avoid copying a protected design or trademark.
What tolerance should I expect on dimensions?
Dimensional tolerances are set per component at sampling. Agree them on the approved sample rather than assuming exact millimetre matches on a natural-hair product.
